This time of year, it would be nice to hear what sort of welcome or kickoff events have worked well on your campus.

I attend North Carolina Central University School of Law and at the end of the previous school year we had a Christian Legal Society banquet. The banquet was mainly to give encouragement to the soon to be graduates as they finish up their lasts exams and prepare for the bar. At the banquet we had songs of encouragement, I ministered through pantomime and as our keynote speaker we had an experienced Christian lawyer who was also a pastor.

He spoke about his issues and struggles that he had faced through his years as Christian attorney. He had practiced in family law where he admitted that was a difficult area to work in and that he had even worked in criminal law as a defense attorney. It was a lot of fun and of course we had a lot of food for everyone to enjoy as well. We were all a little encouraged that day and the banquet was a great success with a great turn-out. It’s hard to get law students to come Christian events, especially during final exams, but we had a great turnout and those that came were definitely blessed.

I like the banquet idea; we have something similar to it at Davis. We call it Baccalaureate, and we have it at the law school the evening before graduation. Last year several people from the local attorney chapter came, and the chapter leader there gave a talk. Afterward we took a bunch of pictures of the group, which I need to remember to put on our website. Still, it was a good event, and I think something like that, with encouragement for the graduates, is a good thing for chapters to do.

Another thing that our chapter does is Culture Week. At our school, religious student groups are allowed to have culture weeks in addition to ethnic groups, so a couple of years ago the chapter leaders registered our group for a culture week. They reserved the week before Easter, and brought in several speakers to speak during the week. They also decided to try and counter the "Christians are no fun" stereotype by having one day where we all went outside and played field games, like a three-legged race and an egg toss. On the last day they showed the Passion of the Christ. We did it again the next year, except we replaced the movie showing with a pastor who talked about the history of Easter and the meaning behind a lot of the symbolism. We also added an Easter egg hunt last year. That event had some difficulties, but having a kids' section for law students with families was a big hit.
